Sec 2: How to Use Calculator to Solve Simultaneous Equations and Quadratic Equations

Hi Sec Twos,

You shall learn to solve Simultaneous Linear Equations using calculator in Chapter 5 and Solving of Quadratic Equations in Chapter 6. Use this to check your answer. Note that no marks would be given at all if you solve such equations using calculator with no method shown.

Model: SHARP EL-509WM
Colour: White
Instructions to use calculator to solve Simultaneous Equations
Step 1 Press the “Mode” button” once. You should see “NORMAL” and “STAT” modes.
Step 2 Press the “Down” Button to see “EQN” Mode. Press “2”.
Step 3 You will see “2-VLE” and “3-VLE”. We are solving 2 unknowns so we press “0” to select “2-VLE”. “3-VLE” is used to solve 3 unknowns.
Step 4 You will see “a1?”
Step 5 Before we key in the values, ensure that you have arranged your simultaneous equations in the following manner. Otherwise, the calculator will not understand you.

a1x + b1y = c1
a2x + b2y = c2

a1 and b1 are coefficients of x and y of the first equation respectively.
c1 is the constant term of the first equation.
a2 and b2 are coefficients of x and y of the second equation respectively.
c2 is the constant term of the second equation.
Step 6 Key in your value for a1, then press “=”. You will see “b1?”
Step 7 Key in your value for b1, then press “=”. You will see “c1?”
Step 8 Key in your value for c1, then press “=”. You will see “a2?”
Step 9 Key in your value for a2, then press “=”. You will see “b2?”
Step 10 Key in your value for b2, then press “=”. You will see “c2?”
Step 11 Key in your value for c2, then press “=”. You will your answer for x.
Step 12 Press “=” and you will see your answer for y.
Step 13 Press “=” and you will see the determinant is calculated too.
Step 14 Press “=” and you will see “a1?” again. You can start solving another set of simultaneous equations immediately or switch back to the “Normal” mode.

Instructions to use calculator to solve Quadratic Equations
Step 1 Press the “Mode” button” once. You should see “NORMAL” and “STAT” modes.
Step 2 Press the “Down” Button to see “EQN” Mode. Press “2”.
Step 3 You will see “2-VLE” and “3-VLE”. Press the “Down” button.
Step 4 You will see “QUAD” and “CUBIC”.
Step 5 Press 2 to solve Quadratic Equations and 3 to solve Cubic Equations
Step 6 Ensure that your quadratic equation is arranged in the form of ax2 + bx + c = 0
Step 7 Upon keying in 2, you will see “a?”
Step 8 Enter your value for “a” and press “=”. You will see “b?”
Step 9 Enter your value for “b” and press “=”. You will see “c?”
Step 10 Enter your value for “c” and press “=”. You will see “X1=?” This is your first root.
Step 11 Press “=” and you will see “X2=?” This is your second root.
Do note if roots are imaginary roots or repeated roots. It would be reflected on your calculator.
Step 12 Press “=” and you will see “a?” again. You can start solving another quadratic equation immediately or switch back to the “Normal” mode.

Enjoy~
